Horsham Canoe Club was founded in the late summer of 1986 as a result of an Adult Education Course in kayaking run by the Forest School in Horsham, hence the original name of the club, Forest Canoe Club. In the early years the club had close links with the Adur Canoe Club and Chichester Youth Wing using some of their instructors as all club members were beginners. Joint trips were run with the Adur Club.

Membership initially was mainly adults but now has a very mixed age membership, of which half are under the age of 18. The Club now has a number of British Canoeing (BC)  coaches able to provide training for both the BC's Star Awards for adults and Paddlepower awards for youngsters.
