Canoeing for all the family

Horsham Canoe Club, based in Horsham, West Sussex.
Horsham Canoe Club was founded in the late summer of 1986 as a result of an Adult Education Course in kayaking run by the Forest School in Horsham, hence the original name of the club, Forest Canoe Club. In the early years the club had close links with the Adur Canoe Club and Chichester Youth Wing using some of their instructors as all club members were beginners. Joint trips were run with the Adur Club.

Membership initially was mainly adults but now has a very mixed age membership, of which half are under the age of 18. The Club now has a number of British Canoe Union (BCU)  coaches able to provide training for both the BCU's Star Awards for adults and Paddlepower awards for youngsters.

We train and certify our club members through the British Canoe Union Award scheme.

Paddlesport Start I 1 to 3 Star

The Paddlesport Start Award is designed to provide a framework for a paddlers first session. It is very much an encouragement  award and can be used by coaches who offer taster sessions, or as a first session of a series. It is an adult version of Paddlepower start.

The BCU One Star is a flat water award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills. The one star can be taken in any kind of paddlesport craft (e.g. sit-on-top, slalom C2, polo boat, sea kayak, racing canoe etc.)

E: info@horshamcanoeclub.co.uk, please give us your name, contact details and state what sort or introduction you would like, whether it be a pool, lake or river session.
In the summer, from May to September, we hold club nights on a Thursday evening at Southwater Country Park lake.

This is the perfect teaching and learning environment as it is on flat water, the coaches don't have to worry about their group floating off and the paddlers can focus on their strokes without (too many) distractions. All in all, it is a very safe controlled environment.

The hut will be open by 6:30 p.m.. Juniors will be kitted out first with a start time on the water of 6:45 p.m. Once the juniors are away from the hut adults will then be able to get their kit, their start time will be 7 p.m. The doors to the hut will be shut at this time. We will stick to these timings rigidly in order that full sessions can be enjoyed by all.

A responsible adult must be present, either on the water or on the bank, for each junior for the duration of the session and when the juniors’ session finishes at 8 p.m. Their Club kit must be put away once they are off the water, not left around to be put away after the adults have finished at 9 p.m. This must be done by adults, children are not to be allowed in the hut for safety reasons.

Fancy a Kayaking taster session, improving your kayaking skills, or even learning to roll during the cold winter months? If so, Horsham Canoe Club can help you.

We have an arranged pool time at Cottesmore School (Pease Pottage) for every second Sunday evening from September until April from 5pm til 7pm. This is an excellent facility with ample safe parking and very easy pool access for boats. It is also close to Horsham.

Obviously there are a few rules aimed at members' safety and care of the pool. The pool is big enough to accommodate 10 boats on the water at the same time, which is sufficient for paddlers to work in pairs to practice support strokes, rescue skills, rolling, freestyle moves and rescue techniques.

Depending on demand we are also keen to introduce fun events such as canoe polo, team relay races etc. If you have an idea please let us know.

The sessions are open to all members of all abilities and you do not even have to have your own boat. The school has kindly arranged for us to keep a number of club boats, paddles and spraydecks at the pool for use by members who do not have their own boats. The cost of each session is £6.00 per paddling member.
